Black Hills State University - Bordeaux Hall

Year: 2018

Location: Black Hills State University, Spearfish, SD

Bordeaux Hall on the campus of Black Hills State University is a new, 4-story residence hall for 196 students. The design was carefully thought out and researched to maximize the benefit to the individual BHSU student while encouraging socialization and collaboration with their fellow peers. The design of the 4-student suites include a traditional 2-student dorm-style room with a connecting bathroom to another 2-student room. The connecting bathroom is designed to accommodate all 4 suite-mates with a private toilet room, a private shower and 2 sinks with ample counter space. Each floor of the 4-story building includes a larger lounge for social gatherings, a smaller lounge, a study room and a laundry room to encourage social interactions outside of the individual suites. The building as a whole has a large 2-story lounge with a signature stone fireplace and a small food venue and also directly connects 2 adjacent residence halls (Thomas Hall and Heidepriem Hall) for additional connections to other students. The project as a whole included extensive sitework and walking paths and features a basketball court, volleyball court, a large firepit, an outdoor teaching amphitheater, and a disc golf course. The project achieved a LEED Silver rating from the United States Green Building Counsel (USGBC).
