The SURF Maintenance Facility supports world-class underground research by providing essential above-ground spaces for maintenance, storage, staging, delivery, and administration—serving both above and below ground operations. The new 26,000-square-foot facility replaces an outdated and inefficient storage building originally constructed in the early 1900s, revitalizing the site with a modern, highly functional design. Positioned on the footprint of the former structure, the facility leverages existing above- and below-grade access while making the most of this strategically located site. The plan was developed through close collaboration with SURF staff, whose insights guided the layout, adjacencies, and operational flow to maximize efficiency and performance. Respecting the campus’s historic context, the design maintains key architectural elements to meet local Historic Preservation requirements. 3PEAK Architecture also partnered with SURF to deliver the project through an effective Construction Management process that ensured efficiency, collaboration, and value throughout development.
